My Design Process

Research & Discovery

The initial phase involved understanding the target audience and identifying the needs of diverse user groups. Given the competitive nature of the news industry, I conducted comparative research to analyze similar platforms in terms of functionality, user experience, and design. I evaluated major news websites, focusing on:

  • Navigation and layout structure

  • Visual hierarchy and content presentation

  • Interactive elements and responsiveness

  • Accessibility features and content accessibility

This research helped uncover the best practices and common pitfalls in the news website design space. It also provided a clear benchmark for the features and design approaches that The Watch could adopt to create a unique and user-centric experience.

Define User Personas & User Flows

Based on the insights gathered, I defined key user personas that represent the diverse audience segments for The Watch, such as regular news readers, casual browsers, and people seeking specific categories like sports or entertainment.

With these personas in mind, I mapped out user flows to ensure that each journey through the site was seamless, intuitive, and focused on providing quick access to relevant content.

Wireframing & Prototyping

Next, I moved on to the wireframing phase, where I sketched the layout for the homepage and key internal pages. The goal was to design a simple, structured, and clean interface that would allow users to easily navigate through different categories.

Following the wireframes, I created interactive prototypes using tools like Figma, simulating the user experience and testing navigation, content placement, and responsiveness across devices.

Visual Design

Once the wireframes and prototypes were validated, I focused on the visual design of the website. Drawing inspiration from the comparative research, I crafted a modern, aesthetic design that aligned with the brand's values of trust and accuracy. Key design elements included:

  • A clear visual hierarchy to highlight important content

  • Consistent typography, colors, and branding for cohesion

  • High-quality images and icons that enhanced the user experience

Usability Testing & Iteration

After the initial design was completed, I conducted usability testing with real users, gathering feedback on the website’s layout, readability, and overall user experience. Based on the feedback, I iterated on several elements, making adjustments to enhance usability and address any pain points.

Challenges and Observations

  • Balancing content and usability while managing diverse categories without overwhelming users. The challenge was organizing the content in a clear and efficient way.

  • Ensuring a smooth mobile experience across different screen sizes and devices. Optimizing the design for responsiveness was key to user accessibility.

  • Designing for trust and credibility while delivering accurate information. The design needed to communicate authority without feeling too formal.

  • Addressing user navigation difficulties when switching between categories. Simplifying navigation while providing quick access to all content areas was essential.

  • Creating a design that can scale for future content growth and additional features. The design needed flexibility for future updates and a growing user base.
